GOOD GRUB: GOLDEN SPOON AWARDS

The Golden Spoon Awards, back for another year, have recognized 21 restaurants across Tampa Bay. Announced in early December, these annual dining nods from the Times’ sibling magazine Florida Trend started more than 50 years ago and are divided into three categories: Golden Spoons, Hall of Fame and Best New. Restaurants are judged on their food the most but also their digs and service. Best New accolades went to Baum Ave Market (St. Petersburg) and Oak & Ola (Tampa). Bern’s Steak House (Tampa), Bob Heilman’s Beachcomber (Clearwater Beach), Cafe Ponte (Clearwater), Columbia Restaurant (Tampa), Marchand’s Bar & Grill (St. Petersburg), Mise en Place (Tampa) and Rooster & the Till (Tampa) scored the Hall of Fame title. And the classic Golden Spoon distinction went to Annata (St. Pete), Caretta on the Gulf (Clearwater Beach), Cena (Tampa), Edison: Food+Drink Lab (Tampa), Ichicoro (Tampa), Il Ritorno (St. Pete), On Swann (Tampa), Pane Rustica Bakery & Cafe (Tampa), Parkshore Grill (St. Pete), Parts of Paris (Safety Harbor), Rusty’s Bistro (Clearwater) and Sea Salt (St. Pete). CHEERS: FESTIVAL OF WOOD & BARREL-AGED BEER

Keeping the local love going, Chicago’s Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beer honored the innovative barrel- and wood-aged creations of two craft breweries and a meadmaker in Tampa last month. Hidden Springs Ale Works took home silver for its After Dinner Decadence in the Specialty Strong/Porter Stout category; Garagiste Meadery silver for its Cognac Barrel-Aged Black Widow in the Cider/Perry/Mead category; and Coppertail Brewing Co. for its Créature de mer Rouge in the Wild Beer Sours With Fruit category. (Coppertail’s Créature de mer Rouge, first introduced during its fifth anniversary in August, is still available in 375-milliliter caged and corked bottles at its Ybor City taproom.) More than 200 breweries this year sought top honors in 12 categories from the Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beer, a prestigious festival and competition started in 2003.
