Food Tech News: A Soylent Energy Drink and Vertically Farmed Strawberries - The Spoon

Greetings from the black hole of holiday time, when we’re not sure exactly what day it is or how many sprinkled butter cookies we’ve eaten. As many people are taking time off to celebrate with their families, this week was a little lighter on food tech news. But there were still several notable stories that caught our attention, from a new Soylent energy drink to vertical farming innovation to Clean Juice catering. Enjoy!

Soylent unveils “first complete energy drink”
This week Soylent, maker of the eponymous line of nutrient-dense drinks and snacks, launched what their press release calls “the first complete energy drink to fuel the mind and body.” Called Soylent Stacked, the 11-ounce beverage has plant-based protein, fats, carbs and nutrients as well as nootropics, which are meant to enhance focus, and energy drink standbys caffeine and L-theanine. For anyone who’s curious to sample, the new drink is now available for purchase on Soylent’s website.

Swedish vertical farming company grows strawberries
Grönska, a Swedish company developing vertical farming technology, announced via a LinkedIn it had successfully grown strawberries indoors in the middle of winter without the use of pesticides. For those who don’t know, growing anything beyond leafy greens and herbs via vertical farming is extremely challenging, so this is actually a significant achievement for the indoor farming space. Grönska teased that it would release more details soon about how it achieved this feat.

Clean Juice partners with ezCater
Juice bar franchise Clean Juice is teaming up with corporate catering platform ezCater to launch its new catering menu. Clean Juice already has over 60 brick and mortar stores nationwide. Within ezCater’s service, Clean Juice will now offer a range of catered healthy food options, from fresh-pressed juice to acai bowls, available for pickup or delivery from all existing locations.
